Inside an agronomy role

Agronomists walk crops through the season, assessing weeds, pests, disease and nutrition, then writing recommendations that balance yield, cost and regulation. Growers and crop production managers carry that responsibility within a single business, planning rotations, drilling, crop protection and harvest with the farm or site team.

In protected cropping and nurseries the work is more controlled, with climate, irrigation, substrates and biological pest control all needing daily attention. Land management and surveying posts sit alongside this, covering estate management, tenancies, valuations and environmental schemes.

Qualifications and the route in

BASIS certification is expected for anyone recommending crop protection products, and FACTS covers advice on fertilisers and nutrient management. Many agronomists hold a degree in agriculture, crop science or horticulture, while rural surveyors work towards MRICS status.

Trainee agronomist schemes are a common entry point, pairing study for BASIS and FACTS with time shadowing an experienced adviser. When applying, explain which crops you know, the acreage and enterprises you have looked after, and any trials or data work you have done.

Common questions

Can I move into agronomy without a degree?

It is possible. People with strong practical farming experience do progress through trainee schemes and BASIS and FACTS study, although some employers prefer a relevant degree.

Do I need BASIS before applying for a trainee agronomist role?

Usually not. Trainee posts are designed for people who will gain BASIS and FACTS on the job, so enthusiasm and crop knowledge matter more at this stage.

Do you recruit growers for glasshouses and polytunnels?

Yes. Talent Agri recruits growers and managers for protected cropping as well as for field-scale production.
