What dairy roles involve day to day

A herdsperson's week is built around milking, feeding, bedding and close observation of the cows, spotting animals that are bulling, lame or off their feed before small problems grow. Calf rearers take charge of colostrum, feeding plans, hygiene and weaning, sometimes across a dedicated rearing site. On robotic units the emphasis shifts towards reading the software, fetching cows that miss visits and keeping the boxes running.

Herd managers add responsibility for fertility, health planning with the vet, staff rotas and milk records. Relief milking is usually arranged locally on a casual basis, but the experience of covering different parlours is valued when you apply for a permanent herdsperson post.

Skills and tickets that strengthen a dairy application

Applicants need at least NVQ Level 2, or the Scottish equivalent, in a relevant subject. Beyond that, employers often look for practical certificates such as foot trimming, DIY AI, safe use of veterinary medicines and tractor or telehandler tickets.

Progression usually runs from herdsperson to assistant herd manager and on to herd or farm manager, and some people later move into consultancy or technical sales. When you apply, set out the systems you have worked with, the number of cows you were responsible for and any gains you made in fertility, cell counts or calf health.

Common questions

Do dairy jobs come with accommodation?

Some do, particularly where staff need to live close to the parlour for early milkings. Each listing states whether a house, cottage or flat is included.

Do you recruit for couples on dairy farms?

Talent Agri does recruit for joint roles suited to couples from time to time. When a vacancy is open to two people, the listing says so.

I have only milked in a herringbone parlour. Can I apply for a robotic unit?

Yes, it is worth applying if your stockmanship is strong, as robot-specific skills can be learned on the job. Mention any herd management software you have used, since that shortens the learning curve.
