Roles from field to factory

Farm workers and operations managers run the practical side of a holding: livestock, fieldwork, machinery, maintenance and record keeping, with managers also taking on budgets, compliance and staff. In food businesses, QA technicians check raw materials and finished products, run traceability exercises and keep the site ready for customer and certification audits.

Glasshouse managers oversee climate, crop scheduling and teams under glass. Produce sales traders buy and sell on behalf of growers, balancing supply against customer orders day by day.

Standards, training and getting ahead

For quality and technical posts, employers look for knowledge of HACCP, BRCGS and retailer codes of practice, along with food safety training at Level 3 or above. Farm roles more often call for tractor, telehandler, pesticide and livestock certificates, together with NVQ Level 2 or its Scottish equivalent.

QA technicians frequently progress to QA or technical manager, and farm workers to supervisor, unit manager or farm manager. Applicants stand out by describing the audits they have supported, problems they have solved and the equipment or systems they use confidently.

Common questions

What does a QA technician in food production actually do?

They test and inspect products, monitor hygiene and critical control points, keep records accurate and help the site pass audits. It is a good starting point for a technical career in food.

Is there work for general farm workers without management experience?

Yes. Talent Agri recruits general farm workers as well as managers, and a relevant Level 2 qualification with a willingness to learn is the starting point.

Do farm operations roles involve office work?

Increasingly so. Alongside practical tasks, operations managers handle rotas, compliance paperwork, farm software and budgets.
