Animal feed & nutrition recruitment

Animal Feed and Nutrition Recruitment

Talent Agri handles animal feed recruitment and animal nutrition recruitment for feed manufacturers, merchants and nutrition businesses, with a focus on the sales and technical people who look after farm customers.

Feed is a relationship business. The right territory manager knows the farms on their patch, understands rations and forage, and is trusted on the yard. We recruit for that combination, which is why so much of our agricultural sales recruitment starts with a direct approach rather than an advert.

Sales and technical roles in feed

Most of the roles we fill in this sector are commercial. Area and territory sales managers for ruminant feed or livestock nutrition manage a patch of dairy, beef and sheep customers and are expected to grow tonnage. Agricultural sales and account managers look after a portfolio of existing accounts, often including larger farms with complex needs. Animal nutrition sales managers lead a team or a product range and carry a target for the business as a whole.

What separates these jobs is how technical the conversation is. Some roles sell compound feed and blends; others involve ration formulation, forage analysis and on-farm performance advice. We establish where your role sits on that scale so we can judge whether a candidate has the nutrition knowledge to back up the sale.

  • Area and territory sales managers (ruminant feed)
  • Livestock nutrition sales managers
  • Agricultural sales and account managers
  • Animal nutrition and technical sales managers
  • Monogastric feed sales roles for pig and poultry customers

Territories, customers and the real hiring problem

The hard part of feed sales recruitment is not finding people who can sell. It is finding people who can sell feed in your area, to the type of farm you supply, without breaching a restrictive covenant or losing the trust that keeps customers loyal. A candidate's existing relationships are valuable, but we are careful to understand any restrictions in their current contract before you rely on them.

We look closely at how a candidate builds a territory: how they find new customers, how they handle price pressure when commodity costs move, and how they keep accounts during a difficult year. Qualifications help too. An animal science or agriculture degree, nutrition training, or the SQP qualification where the role includes animal medicines, can all strengthen a shortlist.

  • Location and size of the territory
  • Species and farming systems on the customer list
  • Depth of ration and forage knowledge required
  • Covenants or notice restrictions in a candidate's current contract
  • Company car, mileage and incentive structure

How we recruit for a feed territory

  1. 01

    Walk the territory with you

We start with a map of the patch, the current customer base, the products and where you want to win new business.

  2. 02

    Identify who already sells there

We look at the people already calling on farms in and around your area, from rival feed businesses to merchants and allied suppliers, and approach them in confidence.

  3. 03

Test the commercial and technical depth

Conversations cover how candidates win and retain accounts, their nutrition knowledge and any contractual restrictions that could affect their first months.

  4. 04

    Plan the handover

We help you agree an offer and a start date that protects existing customers, especially if the territory has been uncovered for a while.

The right service for feed and nutrition roles

Territory and account manager roles usually suit our contingency-based permanent service. National sales managers, commercial directors and senior nutritionists are typically better served by a retained search, given the discretion and depth such appointments need.

Job advertising can work for sales support and graduate-level roles, where enthusiastic applicants are more likely to be actively looking.

Animal feed & nutrition recruitment questions

Can you recruit a feed rep who already knows our area?

That is often what clients ask for, and we search the local market first. We also check any restrictive covenants with candidates early, so you understand how quickly they could start working with existing contacts.

Do our feed sales staff need to be nutritionists?

Not always. Some territories need strong relationship sellers with sound practical knowledge, while others need someone able to formulate and defend a ration. We help you decide which before the search begins.

Do you recruit for monogastric as well as ruminant feed?

Yes. We recruit for ruminant, pig and poultry feed businesses. The customer base and technical knowledge differ, so we treat them as separate briefs.

Territory left uncovered?

Every week without a rep on the patch gives competitors a chance to visit your customers.

Tell us about the territory, the customers and the person you need. We will be straight with you about who is available and how to attract them.
