Farming in Norfolk, Suffolk and the Fens

Norfolk and Suffolk combine big arable estates with outdoor pig and poultry production on the lighter soils. Cambridgeshire and the Fens grow vegetables, salad crops and potatoes on some of the country's most fertile land, supplying packers and processors nearby.

Glasshouse production of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers adds year-round growing roles, and the region's food processors need technical and QA staff. Lincolnshire, just over the border in the East Midlands, shares much of the same cropping, so people living there may find roles in the Fens and west Norfolk within reach.

Seasonal rhythms and getting around

Arable and vegetable work follows a clear calendar, with busy spells at drilling, spraying and harvest and long days through summer and autumn. Machinery operators and workshop staff feel those peaks most.

The region is flat and served by the A11, A14 and A47, though many farms sit well away from public transport. Tied housing is less common on arable farms than on livestock units, so think about commuting distance if a role does not include accommodation.
