What employers look for in a farm manager

Most owners want evidence that you have already carried responsibility: a budget you managed, a team you led, or a unit whose performance you can talk through with figures. Herd managers are usually asked about fertility, cell counts and youngstock; growing managers about yields, labour planning and crop protection decisions.

Paperwork matters as much as practical skill. Expect questions on assurance audits, health and safety, staff rotas and how you keep records, because those are the parts of the job an owner hands over completely.

Stepping up into management

Many managers move up from senior herdsperson, deputy or assistant manager posts, often on the same type of system. If you are making that step, an assistant herd manager or assistant farm manager role is a realistic route, and several of our vacancies are pitched at that level.

When you apply, lead with the decisions you made rather than the tasks you did. A short summary of the size of operation, the people you supervised and one or two results you were responsible for gives an employer far more to go on than a long list of duties.

Common questions

Do farm manager roles usually include a house?

Many livestock management roles come with housing, but not all. Each listing says whether accommodation is part of the package.

Can I apply for a manager role if I have only been a deputy?

Yes. Some vacancies are aimed at assistant or deputy managers ready to step up; the listing will describe the level of experience the employer expects.

Are senior farm management roles always advertised?

Not always. Some senior searches are run confidentially, so it is worth sending your CV to apply@talentagri.co.uk even if no suitable role is listed.
