Farming in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset

Dairy is the backbone of farming in much of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, with long grazing seasons supporting both spring-calving grazing herds and housed, high-yielding systems. Beef and sheep are common on the moors and steeper ground, from Exmoor and Dartmoor to Bodmin Moor.

Further east, Dorset and Wiltshire have more mixed and arable farming, and the Somerset Levels are known for grazing and cider orchards. Cornwall's mild climate suits early vegetables, potatoes and flowers, while machinery dealers and feed suppliers serve the livestock farms across the region.

Getting about and relocating

Farms in the South West are often reached by narrow lanes some way from main roads, so most roles assume you can drive. Journeys that look short on a map can take longer than expected, which is worth allowing for when you weigh up a role.

Some dairy and livestock jobs in the region come with a cottage or house, which helps if you are moving from elsewhere. Rents in popular coastal areas can be high, so check whether accommodation is part of the package before you apply.
