Poultry Farm Manager

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced poultry professional looking for a long-term position with genuine responsibility for the day-to-day management of a commercial poultry…

Working on pig and poultry units

A poultry farm manager is responsible for bird welfare, house environment, feed and water, flock records and the team, whether the site produces broilers, layers or breeders. On pig units the day revolves around feeding, health checks, farrowing, weaning and moving stock, with close monitoring of growth and mortality.

Sales and technical managers work with producers on nutrition, health products, equipment or genetics, and need to understand unit performance as well as commercial targets. Both sectors rely on increasingly sophisticated environmental controls and data, so comfort with technology is useful.

Biosecurity, training and progression

Strict biosecurity is part of daily life: showering in and out, dedicated clothing, controlled visitors and rules about contact with other livestock. Employers value stockmanship certificates, training in administering medicines and experience with assurance schemes such as Red Tractor or RSPCA Assured.

Stockpeople can progress to assistant manager, unit manager and multi-site roles, and technical knowledge opens doors into advisory or sales positions. In your application, mention the type and scale of unit you have worked on and the performance measures you improved, such as feed conversion or mortality.

Common questions

Why do some poultry jobs ask that I don't keep birds at home?

It is a biosecurity measure to reduce the risk of disease, including avian influenza, reaching a commercial flock. Many pig units have similar rules about keeping pigs.

Do I need experience to work on a pig farm?

Experience helps, and some units will train a keen newcomer who holds a relevant Level 2 qualification. Management roles require a proven track record.

Are pig and poultry management roles based on a single site?

Some are, while others cover several sites within a region. The listing sets out how the role is structured.
