Growing managers plan plantings, irrigation, nutrition and crop protection to deliver fruit or vegetables of the right quality at the right time. Harvest operations managers organise large picking teams, labour planning, quality checks and the flow of produce from field to packhouse, often through intense peak weeks.
Commercial roles look outward to customers, managing retailer programmes, pricing, forecasting and supply. Across all of these the seasons set the pace, with long days in summer and planning, budgeting and crop preparation through the winter.
Hands-on knowledge of the crop counts heavily, along with experience of managing seasonal workers and meeting retailer and audit standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. or LEAF Marque. Spraying certificates, BASIS for growing roles and a full driving licence are commonly requested.
Many managers started as supervisors on the farm or in the packhouse, so a first leadership role is a recognised step towards site or growing manager. In your application, give figures where you can, such as hectares managed, team sizes or improvements in pack-out and waste.
Picking work is seasonal, but the management and technical roles Talent Agri recruits for are permanent, year-round positions.
Planning, people management and supply chain skills transfer well, particularly into harvest operations and commercial posts. Showing a genuine interest in how crops are grown will help your application.
This page focuses on edible crops such as fresh produce and soft fruit. Nursery and protected cropping posts are often listed under agronomy and growing instead.
